Electric cars are more popular than ever, and that’s thanks to the increase in Chinese car manufacturers offering models in the UK.
Low prices have always been a hurdle for EVs to climb, but there are now more affordable electric vehicles that offer decent driving ranges and come with lots of standard equipment.
China is on a roll with its affordable EVs, but which ones are the most important out of an eclectic mix of different models?
We take a look at some of the most prominent Chinese EVs on the market today.
BYD Atto 2
BYD is one of the fastest-growing Chinese car brands in the UK, and the Atto 2 is its latest creation.
It’s built to rival cars like the Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric, and features a 45.1kWh battery pack and electric motor that BYD claims can take the car up to 194 miles on a single charge. There is a decent 400 litres of boot space and it comes with lots of standard equipment.
However, although prices have not been confirmed at this stage, it’s said that the car will cost around £30,000 when it goes on sale later this year, undercutting all of its rivals on price.
MG Cyberster
It’s one of the latest two-seater sports cars with battery power. The MG Cyberster is a car that is very important, because it shows that going electric can still be fun.
There is a choice of two variants. The entry-level car comes with a 77kWh battery pack and electric motor that MG claims can take the car up to 316 miles. Or, there is a dual motor variant that has all-wheel-drive and gives a claimed range of up to 276 miles.
The car features electronic scissor-opening doors and a cabin with four screens, making it feel very modern.
BYD Seal
The Seal is one of BYD’s best models to date, and that’s because it is good to drive and undercut its rivals on price.
It starts from £45,695 and competes in the compact executive market with the likes of the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4.
The Seal looks good and can hold its own when it comes to refinement, quality and practicality. That makes it a strong contender in this sector of the market despite its relatively unknown brand image.
Leapmotor T03
A new company that has entered the market is Leapmotor. They are responsible for making affordable EVs and are a Chinese brand that is partly owned by the European giant, Stellantis.
The firm’s new T03 is a compact city car that is setting its sights on Britain’s cheapest new EV - the Dacia Spring.
The T03 is priced from £15,995, making it the second cheapest EV in the UK, and comes very well equipped with a glass panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors and climate control all fitted as standard.
Under the bonnet, there is a 37.3kWh battery pack and electric motor that gives a claimed electric range of up to 165 miles – which is 25 to 30 miles better than its biggest rival from Romania.
BYD Dolphin
Another BYD that makes it onto this list is the Dolphin. It’s a small compact hatchback that has unusual styling and can be specified in a range of interesting and exuberant exterior colours.
Under the bonnet, there is a choice of a 44.9kWh battery pack or larger 60.4kWh. The former can achieve a claimed 215 miles on a single charge, while the latter can manage 265 miles.
The BYD Dolphin represents excellent value for money against its rivals, with a practical five-door body style, decent interior space and generous levels of standard equipment.
Prices for the Dolphin start at £26,195 and rise to £31,695, making it one of the most affordable compact EVs on the market.
